The Journey Begins: Sourcing the Golden Fiber
The creation of our rugs begins long before the weaving starts. It begins in the fertile deltas of Eastern India and Bangladesh, where the Corchorus plant is cultivated.
Jute is famously known as the "golden fiber" due to its natural, lustrous hue. It is an incredibly sustainable crop; it relies almost entirely on natural rainfall, requires minimal pesticides, and is 100% biodegradable. After harvesting, the stalks are bundled and soaked in water (a process called retting) to soften the outer bark, allowing our farmers to extract the long, silky fibers inside.

Step 1: Spinning and Dyeing
Once the raw jute arrives at our facilities, it must be spun into yarn. While some industrial manufacturers use harsh chemical washes to bleach the fibers, we prefer to maintain the structural integrity of the plant.
The fibers are hand-spun onto large spools. If a design calls for color, the yarn is dyed in small batches. We prioritize AZO-free, non-toxic dyes to ensure our rugs are safe for your home, your family, and the environment.
Step 2: The Art of Hand-Tufting
While we produce various styles, including flatweaves and hand-knotted pieces, The Jute specializes in hand-tufted rugs. This technique allows us to blend the durability of jute with the softness of New Zealand wool to create complex, modern designs.
Here is how the magic happens:
- The Canvas: A master artisan stretches a heavy cotton canvas across a large vertical or horizontal frame. The rug's design is intricately stenciled onto this canvas.
- The Tufting Gun: Using a specialized hand-held tool called a tufting gun, the artisan shoots the blended jute-wool yarn through the canvas, following the stenciled pattern.
- The Precision: It requires immense physical strength, rhythm, and precision. A single 8x10 ft rug can take an artisan several days of continuous, focused tufting to complete.
Step 3: Backing and Finishing
Once the tufting is complete, the rug is far from finished. If you were to look at the back of the canvas, you would see thousands of loose yarn loops.
To secure the yarn, our team applies a layer of natural, non-toxic latex to the back of the canvas. Before the latex dries, a secondary heavy cotton backing is pressed onto it, locking every single fiber in place.
Finally, the rug is flipped over for the finishing touches. Master shearers use specialized scissors and electric clippers to trim the pile to a uniform height, carving intricate details into the borders to make the pattern pop. The rug is then bound along the edges, washed, and stretched in the intense Rajasthan sun to dry naturally.
